چکیده

Biographies Danny Kelly is a PhD student in the Bioengineering Group at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. He graduated with a first class honors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College in 1999. For his masters degree in 2001 he wrote a thesis entitled " A study of middle ear biomechanics using the finite element method ". A W Blayney is a consultant ENT surgeon and P J Prendergast is an associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Abstract Many different designs of prostheses are available for middle ear surgery. Clinical comparisons of such prostheses are often difficult because of the large number of variables involved in the clinical outcome; including the skill of the surgeon or patient variability. In an attempt to compare the performance of four different middle ear implants (Kurz Bell-Tubingen, Kurz Aerial-Tubingen, Xomed no.0362, Xomed no. 0321), a finite element model of the middle ear before and after ossiculoplasty was developed, based on a micro CT scan of the ossicles. The response of each prosthesis was different and could be related in part to the design of the prosthesis or its location within the middle ear. This study shows how finite element modelling might be used in optimizing the design of new middle ear prostheses.

Ossiculoplasty: A Prospective Study of 80 Cases

Introduction: The use of ossicular graft material in ossicular chain reconstruction has significantly improved hearing results hearing after tympanoplasty and tympanomastoid surgery for chronic otitis media. Today, otologists have a wide array of tools from which to choose, but may find it difficult to know which middle ear implant works best.   Materials and Methods: A prospective study of 80 ...

Total Ossiculoplasty: Advantages of Two-Point Stabilization Technique

Objective. Evaluate a porous polyethylene prosthesis with two-point stabilization in total ossiculoplasty. This approach utilizes a lateral as well as a medial graft to stabilize a total ossicular prosthesis (TOP). Study Design. Retrospective cohort review of total ossiculoplasty. Methods. All patients who underwent total ossiculoplasty during the years 2004-2007 were included in the study grou...

Incudostapedial rebridging ossiculoplasty with bone cement.

OBJECTIVE This study reports the authors' technique and hearing results with bone cement reconstruction of the incudostapedial chain. The technique is called incudostapedial rebridging ossiculoplasty. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective analysis of the hearing results of the incudostapedial rebridging ossiculoplasty was performed on 15 patients. BACKGROUND Recently, bone cements have been availabl...

Ossiculoplasty positioned via posterior tympanotomy.

Tympanoplasty now frequently uses cartilage to repair bone lysis in the external auditory canal (EAC) and to reinforce the tympanic membrane. Once in place, however, the cartilage may complicate ossiculoplasty by obstructing visualization of the stapedial region. Posterior tympanotomy, when included in the tympanoplasty procedure, may provide an interesting means of positioning the ossiculoplasty.
